2016's 'IT' Makeup Trend

The powers that be are trying to make Azure blue the it thing in makeup this season.  Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about this trend.  Marc Jacobs was all over it at runway events, Sephora is starting to promote it too, and Maybelline is supposedly going to release a new (dark) blue lipstick.  Still, Azure is a bold choose and might scream too much.  This is especially a bold choice for anyone used to wearing nude shades.

It seems that color is coming in though.  A fact I, as a color wearer, is all too happy about.  There are much easier colors to wear and not convinced this is going to become a stable trend but here are some picks for anyone looking to brighten up their look with this year's it color.

Paranoid by Kat Von D

Paranoid by Kat Von D ($21)

Paranoid is a bright blue eyeshadow and part of a relatively new collection from Kat Von D.  It’s part of the Metal Crush collection.  These shadows, as far as I’ve tried them, are really nice.  They are bright, pigmented and apply beautifully.

Chaos by Urban Decay

Chaos by Urban Decay ($20)

Chaos is a pencil liner from Urban Decay.  This shade is their darkest blue in their 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil but doesn’t seem as dark as Paranoid and seems to be a bit more of a periwinkle color.  I haven’t tried this specific shade, but the Urban Decay liners I have tried are some of my favorite pencil liners.  These apply beautifully and stay throughout the day.

My Boyfriend's Blue Jeans by Sephora

My Boyfriend’s Blue Jeans by Sephora ($10)

My Boyfriend’s Blue Jeans is a pencil liner from the Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof by Sephora.  This is their darkest true blue.  I own a mini of this that I was sent by Sephora.  It’s a beautiful color, but the liner is so hard that it was a little difficult to apply.  I liked how it lasted but I doubt it specifically lasts 12 hours (few things actually do).

Echo by Kat Von D

Echo by Kat Von D ($20)

Echo is a dark blue liquid lipstick from Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick.  There are some colors in this line that are unique and beautiful and well worth checking out.  I’ve never tried this particular shade but I have had problems with some of the darker shades being a bit sheer.

Black is Blue by Ardency Inn

Black is Blue by Ardency Inn ($27)

Black is Blue is an apt description as it is a blackened blue kind of color.  This is a part of the Modster Long Play Supercharged Lip Color.  This shade is darker than Echo.  I feel like you don’t hear a lot about Ardency Inn and honestly I’ve never tried any of their cosmetics.

Matte Royal by Mac

Matte Royal by Mac ($17)

Matte Royal is a royal, matte blue color from Mac.  This shade seems to be lighter than both the previously mentioned lipsticks but still is darker than the azure makeup trend.  This is a matte and not a retro matte so it is going to be a little creamier.  I remember when this came out, telling the woman at the Mac counter that I was willing to do some experimental things when it came to makeup but I draw the line at wearing blue lipstick.  However, I’ve since bought some brighter blues...

Overall, I feel like this darker blue trend will be more suited to tanner and deeper skin tones.  I am extremely pale and don’t feel like these colors are really going to suit me.  Plus blue lipstick is a little difficult to pull off, regardless.  I’ve seen tanner people beautifully wear Mac’s Matte Royal, but on me I can’t help but feel it would look positively silly.

New To Sephora: Milk Makeup

Milk makeup is a new line at Sephora.  Today we will be talking about the Eye Pigments, Lip Colors, Matte Quad, Lip Marker, and Lip + Cheek products.  I’ve never heard of this brand before but some of their products look incredibly cute.

First up let's talk about the Eye Pigments.  This is what I’m most excited to try.  They come in these super cute squeeze tubes and retail for $24.  There are six colors on the website:  a taupe, green, blue, purple, brown, and charcoal shade.  The reviews say these take some time to dry and can have an odd texture. Pictured, all colors.

Next up, the Lip Colors.  I, of course, greatly love lip products.  I have quite the collection.  These come in a lip pencil type form and retail for $22.  There are eight shades available on the website:  a nude, pink, hot pink, orange-red, a dark red, a more true red, a wine color, and a purple shade.  The reviews claim this product is creamy.  The colors seem a bit dated, a fact also stated by one of the reviewers.  I’m not sure I’ll add any of these to my collection.  There’s nothing unique enough, there’s nothing I don’t already have. Pictured, Gnarly and Grrrl.

The Matte Quad has four cute colors.  This retails for $36 and is currently out of stock.  They colors in this quad include a nude, pink, light purple, and a shade described as ‘sand’ that to me looks a little orange.  There is only one quad that is available on the site and it is named Foursome.  The reviews say the packaging is compact but the shadows seem to be unpigmented.  They are unfortunately a cream product, which I have no love for.

The Lip Markers are quite unique.  I’ve never seen products quite like this before.  They retail for $20 and come in four colors.  (They also have a marker type eyeliner which is also available for $20).  The colors come in a bright orange, hot pink, red, and mauve.  I’m definitely interested in trying one of these. Is it just me, or is everyone and the mother coming out with one of these Lip + Cheek products?  These type of products don’t typically have high ratings and people seem to have a love/hate relationship with this particular brand’s one.  These retail for $24 and come in four shades.  There is a pink, coral, mauve, and berry. New Drugstore Liquid Lipsticks Perfect for Spring

Here is my list of five new liquid lipsticks that will be perfect for Spring.  Purples and pinks are the must have lipstick colors for Spring for lips that look as fresh as flowers.

ColourPop Marshmallow

MARSHMALLOW by Colourpop

This shade hasn’t been released yet and I’ve seen a promotional video for it, but there aren’t any pictures yet.  Marshmallow is a gray lavender color.  It will be released as part of a new Satin collection.  The container is the same as the Ultra Matte lipsticks but they don’t set like the Ultra Mattes.  This color will be perfect for Spring. Maybelline Pink Charge

Pink Charge is a beautiful bright pink.  This shade is part of Maybelline’s new Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks.  The formula of these is quite moisturizing, though it isn’t matte and it doesn’t set at all.  This beautiful color just screams Spring.

Sweet Pea is a beautiful pastel pink.  I’ve been hunting it like crazy, but it hasn’t shown up in my area yet.  There aren’t any promotional photos available online, so I’ve linked to a blog that will show you some Blogger photos.  I love the color of this one and the little case it comes in is super cute.

Revlon Devotion

DEVOTION by Revlon

Devotion is a dusty rose pink shade.  This shade may be a little more mature than the others on this list but it’s still a pretty Spring shade.  These have a strong scent and take hours to set.

Milani Fling
Sorry, about the low quality.  This was literally the only picture I could find.

FLING by Milani

Fling is a light lavender mauve.  This shade was recently released to an already established Milani line of liquid lipsticks.  I can’t personally speak to the formula, but these are quite popular.  A beautiful, more unique kind of color for Spring.

Unicorn Tears has a blue appearance in the tube but goes on to look slightly less crazy.  Unicorn Tears is a lavender lipstick with a large amount of blue and iridescent glitter.  I would recommend mixing it in with other colors but can be worn by itself if you’re bold enough.

Lancome Hello Happiness and Paris Please

Paris Please was released as part of Lancome’s A Parisian Spring collection, but it seems to have been added to their permanent lipsticks.  Paris Please is a pastel pink color.  This lipstick is a perfect and beautiful shade for Spring lips.

Mac Saint Germain

Saint Germain has been a part of the Mac collection for several years and is a huge hit.  Saint Germain is a beautiful pastel pink.  This shade is being repromoted as part of Mac’s Flamingo Park collection.

Clinique Wink Pop

WINK POP by Clinique  ($18)
The Clinique Pop lipsticks are well loved and perform beautifully.  Now Clinique has expanded their Pop lipsticks into what is either a liquid lipstick or a lip gloss.  Wink Pop is a nudey light pink that’s said to have a bit of purple to it, a wonderful color for Spring. Part of a brand new line and if they’re anything like the lipsticks, they’ll be amazing.

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Firebird

This lipstick is darkest shade on this lipstick list and is part of the Gwen Stefani Collection.  Firebird is a dark reddish-fuchsia shade.  This might not be the first lipstick color that comes to mind when you think of Spring, but this is the perfect darker shade for spring.  Firebird packs a powerful, colorful punch.

Mac New Chris Chang Collection

I am super excited for the Mac Chris Chang collection.  I mentioned this collection in a previous post, but I wanted to take a minute to talk about the actual collection.

This collection is full of bright and fun shades.  The packaging is absolutely breath-takingly beautiful.  Dear collection, I need you.

This collection is suppose to debut sometime in June 2016 and I am trying my best to be patient.

There seem to be five lipsticks, four eyeshadows, three blushes, an eye liner, and a translucent powder.  The lipsticks are available in red, pink, yellow, blue, and purple shades.  The blushes come in colors of lilac, pink, and orange.  The eyeshadows are available in yellow, blue, orange, and pink.

I’m loving several of the lipstick colors, but I’m not sure about the blush and eyeshadow.  I think a lot of these colors will be difficult to wear, but I hope that I’ll be able to put whatever I pick up to great use.  I’m trying to be more aware of buying things I can actually use.  Why Mac must you tempt me?

UPDATE:  I've been told the names of these.  The 'blushes' are called creme color bases.  I'm not sure if they're blushes or meant to be eyeshadow bases.  There names are Sock It Xiqu (purple),  Peony Pavilion (pink), and Rich Coral (orange).

The eyeshadows are in the colors Pale Pipa (blue), Royal Woo (yellow), Electric Mandarin (orange), and Mu Mu Bloom (pink).

The lipsticks are called DDDevilish (pink), Cloud Gait (blue), Gold XIXI (yellow), Vermillion Vee (red), and Plum Princess (purple).

L'Oreal Colour Riche Eyshadow

L'Oreal Colour Riche Eyeshadows in Petite Perle, Argentic, and Pain au Chocolat.

I picked up three of the new L’Oreal Colour Riche Eyeshadows.  I have Argentic, Petite Perle, and Pain au Chocolat.  Overall, these shadows are pretty and have a nice texture but I don’t love them.  They’re alright, they aren’t bad.  Still, they aren’t my favorite and I much prefer the L’Oreal Infallible shadows.  These don’t have quite as strong a color payoff as the Infallible shadows.

The other problem I have with these, is that none of them really stand up on their own.  Petite Perle and Argentic are light washes.  Pain au Chocolat is beautiful, but I so rarely wear brown shades that this isn’t going to get much use.  It’s also worth mentioning that these don’t layer well.  They don’t stick on top of each other, but I haven’t had trouble adding in shadows from other lines.

These have an interesting feel to them.  They’re quite soft.  They remind me of the way the Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser feels.  I enjoy wearing them because of this comfy texture.  I was thinking because they’re not exactly a powder formula it would be better to apply them using your fingers.  This has proven to be untrue.  I actually think using your fingers forces you to waste some product as these stick to your fingers.  I recommend using brushes with these, brushes work perfectly well.

After I swatched these, I took a picture.  I can't believe how well these stay on your fingers.  Pointer finger is Pain au Chocolat, middle finger is Argentic, and ring finger is Petite Perle.

Petite Perle (205) is a white color that seems to have a pink duochrome shift.  It’s quite pretty but not really all that unique.  I think every palette I have has a similar color.  I’ve heard this line has a matte white shade and I’ve been searching high and low for a color like that.  This is not a matte white shade, though they might have a matte white shade.  It makes a beautiful brow bone highlight and is worth it as long as you don’t already have a shade like this in your collection.

Pain au Chocolat (207) is a brown shadow, it has a darker brown base with a lighter brown shimmer.  I’m not a big fan of brown shadows but I kind of like this one.  In the store, it almost looked like it had a slight purpleness to it which made me want to try it (not to mention this is the shade everyone is talking about).  I haven’t noticed the purpleness when worn or even at home.  I tried using it to deepen up the corner when I wore Argentic, that’s when I discovered these don’t layer.

Argentic (210) is a light shimmery silver shade.  In the store, it looked quite blue-toned.  I was worried about that as I don’t usually like blue-toned silvers but again I haven’t noticed it that much when worn.  Silver eyeshadow is my go to, this isn’t my favorite.  It’s not sheer, but it’s a bit on the pastel side.  It also drives me slightly crazy that this shade’s name is in English while the other two are in French.  Quick tip to anyone learning French, most English words that end in -ic are -ique in French.  The French word for argentic, is argentique.  I’m just splitting hairs, but it could have been uniform.
